Check Engine Light

So what do you do when your “Check Engine Light” comes on? This could mean many things from the simplest of fixes to a big fix depending on what could be going on in your vehicle. When a Check Engine Light appears, it comes from a sensor connected to your vehicle’s ECM, or “engine control module”. It can be an indicator of needed maintenance, or it could also be warning you that a major component issue may happen if not address properly.

Each sensor connected to the ECM will register a code within the ECM that will let the technicians know that the nature of the item needing service or replacement. While it may seem easy for a mechanic to read these codes, it requires very expensive equipment and many years of experience to understand exactly what is causing the code to appear in your vehicle.

Damage that is serious and expensive

If there is a faulty part or system that is bad enough to cause damage that is serious and expensive. The ECM will most likely put your vehicle in a “self-preservation” mode that limits the power on your vehicle which will then at least help you get to a location to diagnose the issues your vehicle is having. If this happens, it is highly recommended to take it to your trusted shop to oversee the issue to avoid serious damage to your vehicle.

Do Not ignore the problem...

When your “Check Engine Light” appears. Do not avoid it. Be sure to get your vehicle looked at even if it’s a small issue. Even the small issues can turn into an expensive repair bill that no one likes to see at any mechanic shop. But unfortunately, these things happen.
